The time has come to explore the structure that keeps us alive. They say that a good person has a big heart. Actually, this really depends on the organism and its size. The bigger the organism, the more complex the structure of its heart is. Today, grade 8 students dissected a pig’s heart that closely resembles a human one. They were able to observe and identify the different chambers, connections, muscles, and layers that protect the cardiac muscles. They also had to explain how the heart pumps blood. During the class, our students observed our protocols regarding safe laboratory practices such as strictly using face masks all the time, hand washing, and disinfecting with alcohol. The heart was properly disposed of afterwards.
